Defense in Depth

defense in depth

The DEFENSE IN DEPTH approach is to defend the system against any particular ATTACK using several independent methods. Often these might be referred to as “layers of protection.” Some have described it as the “swiss cheese slices” approach – there may be holes in each layer, but when stacked together they form a protective barrier.

IEC 62443-4-1:2018 elaborates on this with the notes that defense in depth:

  1. is based on the idea that any one layer of protection, can and probably will be defeated
  2. attackers will be faced with breaking through or bypassing each layer without being detected
  3. a flaw or weakness in one layer can be mitigated by capabilities in other layers
  4. system security is established by a set of layers within the overall network security
  5. each layer is autonomous and not rely on the same functionality nor have the same failure modes as the other layers.
